Proposed access restriction around Kingsmead Square

In June 2020, we introduced an access restriction operating daily between 10am and 6pm. This access restriction was put in place to temporarily aid social distancing for pedestrians by reducing the volume of traffic using the road. This initial scheme was extended in July 2020 to support social distancing in the evening economy, operating between 10am and 10pm.

We are proposing to implement an Experimental Traffic Regulation order (ETRO), extending this access restriction between 11am and midnight, to reclaim road space for our phased public realm improvements.

During these operating hours, only the following modes of transport will be permitted to travel around Kingsmead Square:

  • Walking

  • Cycling

  • Emergency Vehicles (including private ambulances and RSPCA vehicles on call)

Blue Badge holders can use disabled bays on Westgate Buildings. There are also 4 disabled bays in Kingsmead Square Car Park.

The project so far

During 2018 and 2019, we ran a series of surveys and consultations with local businesses and the general public. This study gave local people an opportunity to express their opinions about the future of Kingsmead Square. The opinions we collected informed our phased approach to renewing and improving the square.

As a result of this consultation and in combination with the extension of the existing temporary access restriction, we hope to continue with Phase 2 of our improvements to Kingsmead Square.

Next steps

We are proposing a 6-month initial trial of the Kingsmead Square access restriction, before deciding whether to make it permanent. See the map below for the area affected by the access restriction.
