Scholars' Way consultation

Scheme overview

Scholars' Way aims to connect educational establishments across the city for cyclists, pedestrians and other users of active travel.

We are consulting on our proposals because we want to know your views on the initial designs of the proposed scheme. Your feedback will inform how we continue to shape our plans to improve the area.

Our current proposals affect the area highlighted in blue on this map of the Bath Cycle Network.

We are constantly working to create and improve the network to make it easier and safer to get around the city using modes of active travel.

Our proposals

We are consulting on our initial designs for the scheme. The first phase of improvements to Scholars' Way aims to provide a cycle route together with pedestrian facilities between Claverton Down, Combe Down and Odd Down.

We plan to facilitate and encourage active travel and improve the roads in select areas in the following ways:

  • Create cycle lanes that are separated from general traffic
  • Reduce the speed limits to 20mph
  • Improve pedestrian crossings
  • Improve junctions to make them safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross
  • Redesign bus stops

Areas of development

Scholars' Way aims to connect and improve active travel facilities in the following areas:

Claverton Down

Quarry Farm to Claverton Down Road

  • Upgrade the existing shared path between Quarry Farm and Claverton Down Road to a hard surface (3m in width), to improve conditions for active travel users.
  • Upgrade the existing zebra crossing on Claverton Down Road (east of Shaft Road) to a parallel crossing for pedestrians and cycles.

In 2021 we consulted on improvements to pedestrian and cycle facilities at Copseland, Claverton Down. In June 2021, the Council's Cabinet agreed to progress a new parallel crossing for pedestrians and cycles at the Copseland/Oakley junction as well as footway improvements and an informal crossing at the Copseland/Widcombe Hill junction. These schemes will form part of the improved route for pedestrians and cycles between Claverton Down and Combe Down.

Ralph Allen School

  • Introduce a new zebra crossing on Claverton Down Road, adjacent to Ralph Allen School
  • Improve pedestrian and cycle access into the school
  • Relocate existing bus stops

Combe Down

Church Road and Combe Road cycle route

Introduce an in-carriageway cycle route with painted cycle markings.

Combe Down and Odd Down via Mulberry Park

Combe Road to St Martin's Garden Primary School

Introduce a cycle and pedestrian route from Combe Road to St Martin's Garden Primary School, via Mulberry Park. This route will include:

  • a new parallel crossing on A3062 Bradford Road, east of Mulberry Way
  • a new zebra crossing on Entry Hill between Hawthorn Grove and Entry Rise
  • shared use path between Hansford Close and Clara Cross Lane
  • a new toucan crossing for pedestrians and cycles on Midford Road
  • a new cycleway and shared use footway on Midford Road
  • an upgrade to the existing puffin crossing on the A3062 Frome Road, adjacent to St Martin's Garden Primary School to a toucan crossing for pedestrians and cycles
