Check if you'll need licences for your event

There are several licences that you may need when holding an event in Bath and North East Somerset.

Premises Licence

You will need to apply for a Premises Licence if you want to do any of the following at your event:

  • Sell alcohol by retail
  • Supply hot food or hot drink (after 23:00 or before 05:00 on any day). This includes takeaways, cafés, mobile hot food vans, and any other venue providing hot food or hot drink
  • Provide regulated entertainment, such as performance of a play, showing of a film, indoor sporting events, boxing and wrestling, live or recorded music (or similar), and performance of dance (or similar)

Temporary Event Notice (TEN)

You will need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) if you want to do any of the following activities on a one-off or occasional basis:

  • Sell alcohol by retail
  • Supply hot food or hot drink (after 23:00 or before 05:00 on any day). This includes takeaways, cafés, mobile hot food vans, and any other venue providing hot food or hot drink
  • Provide regulated entertainment such as performance of a play, exhibition of a film, indoor sporting events, boxing and wrestling, live or recorded music (or similar), and performance of dance (or similar)

You will also need a TEN if you intend to hold an event where tickets are sold stating alcohol is "free" (for example "a free glass of wine on entry"). TENs may also be used by licensed premises who want to increase the scope of their licence for a one-off event (for example allowing an extra hour for the supply of alcohol on a special occasion).

Street Trading Consent

If you want to sell, or offer for sale, any article on the streets or highways of Bath and North East Somerset, you will need consent from the council.

Street Collection Permit

You will need to apply for a Street Collection Permit if you want to collect money, or sell articles for charity, in public areas. You must be registered as a charity, and be able to provide the charity number.
