Statement of Community Involvement

Published: 2020-01-28 Updated: 2023-01-30 Subject: Planning checklist

Planning application - local requirement

When the requirement applies

A statement of community involvement is necessary for a major development, which could be any of the following:

  • Developments of 10 or more dwellings
  • Residential sites of 0.5 hectares or more
  • Other buildings with a floor space of 1,000m2 or more, or on sites of 1 hectare or more
  • All applications for waste development or mineral working associated with these developments

What the statement should include

When a major development is proposed, a period of consultation with the local community is required before the application is submitted. The statement should demonstrate that the views of the local community have been sought and taken into account in the formulation of development proposals. The ‘Ground Rules’ for community involvement on planning applications are set out in Chapter 2 of the Neighbourhood Planning Protocol, and section 2 of our Statement of Community Involvement (SCI).
