Library Computers Acceptable Use Policy

We have a policy of acceptable use of library computers and digital systems which all users must agree to. This is designed to protect our equipment, network and all users of People's Network Computers.

In using library computers and other digital facilities, you recognise and accept these guidelines. Failure to follow them may result in losing your permission to use library digital facilities, and further action, including prosecution, where appropriate.

Prohibited activities

No user can do use People's Network digital facilities to:

  • transmit, copy, download or view any material that is threatening, obscene or pornographic
  • transmit, copy or download any material which violates any criminal or civil law, statutory, regulatory or contractual obligations. This includes copyright materials
  • transmit, copy or download commercial software or other material, such as music, in violation of copyright law
  • use profane, obscene, racist or any other language that may be offensive to other users
  • create or place any software on the system, whether you believe it to be malicious or not
  • commit any form of vandalism, including damaging computers, computer systems or networks, and / or disrupting the operation of the network

Disclaimer of responsibility

Bath & North East Somerset council does not accept responsibility for the privacy or safekeeping of data stored on its shared drive. Documents saved on the shared drive are visible to other users, but they cannot open or edit your documents. All documents saved on the shared drive are deleted at the end of the day. 

The council accepts no responsibility for damage to a user’s storage device or other media, when used in conjunction with a People's Network Computer

The council accepts no liability for the quality of information accessed on the internet or for the misuse of the internet by library users

Site Blocking Policy

We use firewalls to block access to websites we deem inappropriate. A member of staff will be happy to investigate, if you discover that a site is blocked or accessible, when you feel it should not be.

Prohibited file types

Some file types are blocked in order to minimise the spread of viruses onto our system. These include some executable, compressed, javascript, VBscript, audio and video file types.
