New Sydney Place and Sydney Road ETRO Trial: Construction schedule

Use this page to learn about the additional traffic restrictions in place during the construction of the New Sydney Place and Sydney Road through-traffic restriction trial between 2 and 15 April 2024.

The construction work includes:

  • removing the dedicated filter lane on Warminster Road (A36 into Sydney Road) and improving Sydney Road and North Road junctions with Warminster Road
  • installing bollards in Sydney Road at the junction with New Sydney Place/New Sydney Mews

The additional restrictions required during construction will include:

  • 24 hour junction closures and diversions
  • 24 hour parking restrictions on Warminster Road, Sydney Mews and New Sydney Place
  • bus stop suspensions and diversions.

How long the works will take

The construction works are planned between 2 and 15 April in two consecutive phases. However, we will aim to complete all the construction work by the end of Friday 12 April.

Construction and the additional restrictions have been split into the following two consecutive phases of work between 2 and 15 April:

  • Phase 1, focusing on Warminster Road: Tuesday 2 April to Wednesday 10 April
  • Phase 2, focusing on the junction of Sydney Road with New Sydney Place: Wednesday 10 April to Monday 15 April

WarningTo allow constant vehicle access for residents, Phase 2 will not start until Phase 1 is complete and the Sydney Road and North Road junction with Warminster Road re-opens.

You can expand the headings below for more detailed information on what each phase entails:

Phase 1 Warminster Road: 2 to 10 April

We will remove the dedicated filter lane into Sydney Road from Warminster Road (A36) and improve the Sydney Road and North Road junctions with Warminster Road, with the following implications during works:

Road closures and diversions

  • North Road junction with Warminster Road will be closed (entry and exit).
  • Sydney Road junction with Warminster Road will be closed (entry and exit).
  • Vehicle access to and from North Road and Sydney Road will only be available from the south of the area. The through-traffic restriction on Sydney Road with New Sydney Place will not be installed until Phase 2.
  • Official diversions via Bathwick Hill will be clearly signed on the road.

Traffic management

  • Temporary traffic lights on Warminster Road to manage traffic flow.
  • All footways remain open.

Parking restrictions

  • 6 on-street parking spaces (c. 30m) on the northern side of Warminster Road (between the bus stop and Darlington Road) will be suspended from 2 to 12 April.
  • A stretch of unregulated parking opposite the junction of North Road will be suspended on 3 April while double yellow lines are installed (unrelated to the trial scheme).

Bus stop suspensions and route diversions

  • The bus stops on North Road serving the Skyline Tour and 734 services will be suspended and diversions are in place from 2-12 April.
  • The two Darlington Road Bus Stops (in both directions) on A36/Warminster Road near the works will be suspended 2-12 April. Please use next alternative stops.

During construction works, please plan your journey in advance using the Travel West Journey Planner and allow extra time for your journey.

Phase 2 New Sydney Place/Sydney Mews: 10 to 12 April

We will aim to complete all the construction work by the end of Friday 12 April but works could be extended to 15 April if circumstances delay work.

Once we have opened the junctions of North Road and Sydney Road with Warminster Road, we will start Phase 2, with the following implications during work:

Bollard installation

  • Bollards installed on Sydney Road and the junction with New Sydney Place/Sydney Mews to create a through-traffic restriction which will remain for a minimum of 6 months.

24 hour Parking restrictions

  • 8 spaces (c.40m) of resident permit bays will be suspended on New Sydney Place.
  • 8 spaces of short-stay parking (c.40m) will be suspended on New Sydney Place.
  • 22 residents permit holder bays on Sydney Mews will be suspended

Footways

  • All footways will remain open.

What happens next

Once construction has ended, the through-traffic restriction on Sydney Road will remain in place for a minimum of six months alongside a public consultation, but all other restrictions will be lifted.
