Convert a civil partnership into a marriage

Find out who can convert a civil partnership into a marriage and how you can do this.

Who can convert a civil partnership

Only same sex couples can convert their civil partnership into marriage.

This can be done either through a simple process called a 'standard conversion', or a two-stage process where the conversion is followed by a ceremony.

The standard conversion

Make an appointment at the register office where you wish to make the conversion. You will complete a legal declaration with details on about you and your civil partnership, and once you sign this declaration with the Superintendent Registrar, you will both be married. No witnesses need to be present.

Your marriage is then registered, and we will issue you with a marriage certificate, which you can collect from us or we can post to you.

This option costs £45, plus £11 for each marriage certificate.

A conversion followed by a ceremony

Our Registration Service offers a range of ceremony options combining the signing at the Guildhall in Bath, or at one of our approved wedding venues in the local area. Alternatively, you could choose a bespoke celebratory ceremony in a venue of your choice after the signing only - we're more than happy to discuss all options with you.

This option costs £45, plus £11 for each marriage certificate. You will also have to pay your chosen venue where your ceremony will take place.
