Apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant

Use this page to find out how to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant. These grants help to fund disabled adaptations in your home.

The maximum grant is £30,000.

Disabled Adaptations are available to disabled, vulnerable people with life-limiting conditions, including elderly people. They are available for adults and children, to homeowners, tenants and also people who live in park homes, etc.

What a disabled adaptation is

Disabled adaptations can help you move around your home and carry out day-to-day activities.

Disabled adaptations could include:

  • stair lifts, step lifts and through-floor lifts
  • ramps to help you get into and out of your home
  • walk-in showers
  • door widening to enable access within your home

How to apply

To apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, you need to contact our Health Access and First Response Team on 0300 2470201. You need to ask for an occupational therapy assessment.

An occupational therapist will then assess your needs and decide what adaptations are necessary and appropriate.

What happens next

Once you have been assessed by an occupational therapist, they will refer your case to our Housing Services team, if you meet the criteria for a Disabled Facilities Grant referral.

Within a year, our Housing Services team will arrange a visit to your home to check that the proposed works are reasonable and practical. We will endeavour to arrange an appointment as quickly as possible.

Our housing officers will then help you with your grant application. Successful applications will help to pay for the adaptations.

Disabled Facilities Grants for adults are subject to a test of resources (means test). If you are already on a means-tested benefit, then you may be eligible without further financial assessment being required.

Disabled Facilities Grants for children are not means tested.

Home Improvement Agency

In some cases, we will, with an applicant’s consent, refer a case to our commissioned Home Improvement Agency, We Care Home Improvements. They can help with a Disabled Facilities Grant application, particularly if it is complicated.

The Home Improvement Agency can also help you apply for other loans and grants, and provide expertise and support if you are facing bigger building works and repair jobs. You can contact them by phone on 0300 323 0700, or by email at info@wecr.org.uk.

Other equipment and works

Following your occupational therapy assessment, your occupational therapist can also help to provide equipment, such as:

  • a commode
  • a perching stool
  • raised toilet seats or chairs
  • bed raisers

They can also arrange minor alterations such as the fitting of hand or grab rails. This work/equipment can help you to:

  • climb your stairs
  • get on or off your chair, bed or toilet
  • get in or out of your bath
  • get in or out of your home
