A4 Upper Bristol Road segregated cycle lanes

Summary of scheme

We want to install new cycle lanes on both sides of Upper Bristol Road between the junctions with Charlotte Street and Midland Road (using funding from the government's Active Travel Fund). We plan to use bollards and splitter islands to separate cyclists from motor traffic, and provide bypasses at bus stops, so that cyclists can remain within the cycle lane, even if there is a stationary bus.

Scheme objectives

We aim to provide a safe and convenient cycle facility, as part of a first phase of putting in place cycle infrastructure along the A4. This aims to achieve the following:

  • Encouraging and enabling more journeys by bike
  • Improving the confidence of people to cycle
  • Giving greater priority to cyclists on the road
  • Improving the health and wellbeing of residents
  • Supporting our work to address the climate emergency

When are we consulting?

Details of the schemes are not currently available, but we will publish full descriptions and plans in February 2021, when we consult the general public about our plans.
